How Private Prescriptions Work in the UK: An Online Consultation Guide

Private prescriptions in the UK are issued following a clinical assessment by a qualified and regulated prescriber. They are separate from NHS prescribing pathways and are paid for by the patient.

This guide explains how private prescribing works for UK residents and internationals alike, when online consultations may be appropriate, and what to expect from a regulated clinical assessment.

What Is a Private Prescription?

A private prescription is issued by a UK-registered prescriber following an appropriate consultation.

Unlike NHS prescriptions:

  • The cost of the consultation and medication is paid privately by the patient

  • The prescriber is not limited to NHS formulary arrangements

  • The consultation takes place outside NHS systems

Private prescribing must comply with UK regulatory standards, and all prescribing decisions are based on clinical judgement.

Can Prescriptions Be Issued Following an Online Consultation?

In some circumstances, yes.

UK independent prescribers may issue prescriptions following a structured remote consultation where this is clinically appropriate and lawful. This typically involves:

  1. Identity verification

  2. Review of relevant medical history

  3. Assessment of current symptoms or medication needs

  4. Clinical safety screening

Remote prescribing is not suitable for all conditions or all medicines. Some situations require in-person examination or referral to other healthcare services.

A consultation does not guarantee that a prescription will be issued.

Who Should Consider a Private Online Consultation?

Patients may consider a private consultation if they:

  • Require clinical advice outside NHS pathways

  • Are not registered with a local GP

  • Are visiting the UK and have a healthcare need

  • Require review of an existing treatment

  • Need timely assessment of a non-emergency concern

In all cases, prescribing decisions are made solely on the basis of clinical appropriateness.

Who Is Not Suitable For An Online Consultation At Arcadia?

At Arcadia, we are not able to help with the following:

  • Prescriptions for controlled drugs

  • Prescriptions for acute mental illness

  • Emergency care (call 999 or attend A&E)

We may prefer that you are seen in-person where possible, if you meet the following criteria:

  • You have an illness affecting your breathing

  • You have an illness affecting your skin, such as a new rash or infection

  • You have missed doses of your blood pressure medicine

How the Process Works

  1. Book a private consultation

  2. Provide relevant medical information

  3. Attend an online assessment with a qualified prescriber

  4. Receive clinical advice

If medication is considered appropriate and safe, a private prescription may be issued in accordance with UK regulations. You’ll receive the link to your prescription electronically, which includes a code. You take that code to your local pharmacy, confirm personal details like name, date of birth and address, and the pharmacy dispenses the prescription for you.

If the condition requires in-person assessment or urgent care, appropriate guidance will be provided.

Timescales

Consultation availability varies depending on demand. Many online appointments can be arranged within 30 minutes, subject to availability and clinical suitability.

Medication supply timelines depend on pharmacy processing and individual circumstances.

Clinical Governance and Safety

Private prescribing in the UK is regulated.

Arcadia Health Clinic operates within UK prescribing regulations and professional standards. Not all medicines are suitable for remote prescribing, and some medicines are legally restricted.

Prescribing decisions prioritise patient safety over convenience.

UK-Wide Consultation Support

Arcadia Health Clinic provides private online consultations for patients across the UK, including visitors who require guidance navigating UK healthcare pathways.

All consultations are delivered by experienced UK-registered independent prescribers within a regulated clinical framework.
